Post Induction Training School (POINTS) Programme

The Post Induction Training School (POINTS) at DIAT is a unique initiative of DRDO for imparting ‘integrated training’ to the newly inducted scientists in the beginning of their scientific and professional career. The main objective of this ‘training programme’ is to train the bright young scientists in a highly specific manner so as to inculcate amongst them a deep sense of scientific temper, innovativeness and tenacity to achieve the set objectives in the most trying situations; and also to motivate and inspire them to pursue an exciting but challenging research career in Defence Sciences and Technologies by constantly enhancing their scientific capabilities and technological skills. Under this scheme, the 1st batch of newly inducted DRDO scientists joined POINTS on 06 March 2003. Since then, 16 batches comprising of 3250 scientists have passed out and the 16th batch of 112 scientists is presently undergoing training here.

The scientists coming from diverse Engineering and Science backgrounds have been divided into 7 technology streams, namely, Aeronautics, Armament Engineering, Combat Engineering & Vehicles, Electronics & Computer Science, Materials & Metallurgy, Missiles and Naval Sciences. They will undergo 08 weeks of General Organisational Orientation Training (GOOT) followed by 08 weeks of General and Advanced Technology Training (GATT). The scientists will be attached to various field units of Indian Armed Forces for 02 weeks and 02 weeks would be spent for acquainting them with service, administrative matters and evaluation etc.

To facilitate the participants to work in heterogeneous groups, group tasks such as KEOTA (Know Each Other and Think Alike) would be conducted. Training on innovation, problem solving skills, soft skills, presentation and communication skills, Material Deisgn and Manufacturing Engineering, Research Methodology would also be imparted to all the scientists. The participants in groups will be involved in a research project and submit the reports during the training programme. Other than the academics, sports, adventure, cultural events, yoga and stress management techniques will be integral parts of the training. Many outstanding faculty members from important Institutions viz. IITs, IISc, NITs and other Institutes of National importance along with the scientist faculty from various DRDO labs/establishments and Armed Forces will deliver the lectures during this POINTS – 16 programme. About 250 experts have already delivered expert lectures to this current batch of POINTS – 16. The curriculum of the training programme is developed and continually updated as per the needs of DRDO.
