Defence Institute of Advanced Technology - Deemed to be University (DIAT) is the premium Technological University of Dept. of Defence R&D/DRDO - Ministry of Defence- Govt. of India, engaged in imparting technical education, in niche areas at PG (M.Tech.) & Ph.D levels over the last 60 years, in its various forms & capacities. The main focus of the institute is to be get evolved as an innovative Unique Teaching & Research University to develop indigenous contemporary defence related technologies. The University is spread over 496 acres in scenic beautiful location, overlooking Khadakwasla Lake, in Sahyadri hills. The University has been awarded various Education Excellence Award. The University has well equipped laboratories with latest equipments and simulation/ analysis software. The M. Tech programmes are designed to include Course of Study, Seminars, Project/ Thesis, Practice School & Industry visit through which a student may develop his/ her concepts and intellectual skills. Above all, the students is encouraged to develop a capacity for free and objectives enquiry, courage and integrity, awareness and sensitivity to the needs and aspirations of society. The emphasis is on practicals & use of software. The education system is CBCS where teaching is done by well qualified faculty drawn from DIAT and serving/ retired scientists & officers of DRDO, Services, ISRO, IIT’s, various R&D and teaching Institutes in India and abroad. DIAT has MoU’s with various Industries in India, Universities & Establishments across the world.


DIAT offers admission to PhD in the frontier areas of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Materials engineering and Applied Chemistry.

a) Qualification

  1. A candidate, seeking admission to the Ph.D. program, shall be required to have passed the qualifying examination securing at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA/DGPA. The qualifying degrees are:-
  1. Master of Engineering/Master of Technology (or equivalent) for Ph.D. in Engineering/Science.
  1. Master in Science (M.Sc. or equivalent) for Ph.D. in Science
  1. B.E. / B.Tech with 10 years of resaerch/industrial experience for Ph.D.  In Engineering / Science (this category is only for sponsored candidates)


Qualified in a national level test such as, CSIR/UGC NET, Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), State Level Eligibility Test, accredited by UGC, Rajiv Gandhi National fellowship, NBHM etc. Subject wise and category wise GATE/NET cut off will be decided by DIAT


b) Age limit

  1. Not more than 28 years as on July 1 of the academic year.
  1. Relaxations as per GOI rules apply to SC / ST / OBC / PH applicants.


  1. The Institute shall implement the reservation policy in Ph.D. admission in accordance with relevant act of Parliament being in-force from the time.
  1. A physically Handicapped SC/ST/OBC candidate shall not get double benefit of being an SC/ST/OBC as also a PWD candidate.


For Part time Students (without scholarship)

  1. A candidate who is selected under Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of AICTE, Faculty Development Program of a State Government, and so on.
  1. A permanent teacher of the Institute with at least four years of service and who is otherwise eligible.
  1. A non-teaching permanent employee of the Institute with five years experience at DIAT, who is otherwise eligible.
  1. JRF/SRF registered in DRDO Laboratories, who are sponsored by the respective Laboratories. For such candidates, a sponsorship letter is required from the Director of their respective Laboratory.
  1. Project staff (JRF/SRF/PA) working under sponsored projects will be allowed to register for PhD, subject to fulfilling the criteria. If the R&D project funding is over then, the institute funding of stipend will be given subject to qualifying GATE/NET (Fellowship)/SLET (Fellowship) examination. Stipend from the institute will be available till five years are completed from the date of Ph.D. registration.
  1. A candidate who is sponsored as a part-time candidate by a government department/public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry and institutions (specified in Annexure - A.), with at least five years of relevant experience, who shall work for his/her Ph.D. in his/her parent organization fulfilling the residency period requirement prescribed in Clause 8.4 of these Rules. The candidate is required to submit a sponsorship and work experience certificate from the parent organization.
  1. No age limit for sponsored candidate.

How to apply:

1        Usually admission will be done in following two semesters of six months each in a year for the Ph.D. program:-

  1. First Semester.         July to December
  1. Second Semester.    January to June [for sponsored only]

2          Admission notice (for Scholarship category) is published in the leading Newspapers and DIAT website during the month of Feb - March every year for admission to Ph.D. programme for July Session.

3        A candidate may be admitted to Ph.D. program at the beginning of any semester, provided the result of the qualifying examination is declared before the commencement of the semester and he/she fulfils the eligibility criteria, mentioned in the admission notice. A candidate shall submit duly filled-in application form to the Joint Registrar (Acad) on or before the last date announced.  All applications of the Sponsored Category candidates must be routed through proper channel.

4          Candidates have to apply online (Full time Ph D Programme-July session), as per the instruction mentioned in the admission notice. Application fee [presently- Rs.500/- for general candidate (250/- for SC/ST, women, PWD, OBC candidates) per programme  is required to be paid through online or by Demand Draft drawn in favour of Vice Chancellor, DIAT, Pune, payable at Pune. The application has to be uploaded as per the instructions provided in the admission notice/website. .A print out of the application acknowledgement generated by the system after upload of application has to be forwarded in a sealed envelope super scribed the name of Ph. D Program to the Joint Registrar (Academics), Defence Institute of Advance Technology, Pune 411025 along with the DD drawn/proof of online payment and with the self certified copies of mark lists, certificates and other testimonials. These documents should reach DIAT latest by the prescribed date in the admission notice, to be published every year. Application will be processed only on receipt of the acknowledgement with proof of online payment/DD. Also. Candidates seeking admission to more than one program (Department) need to apply separately.


Admission to Ph.D. Program will be based on the performance in the entrance exam (written test) conducted by the department concerned followed by personal interview.





 1) MoD Sponsored (DRDO, Coast Guard & Services) Students:-

No Scholarship is provided to sponsored candidates of MOD (DRDO, Coast Guard & Services).

  1. 2) Sponsored Students from Other Agencies/Organizations:-

No Scholarship is provided to sponsored candidates of Other Agencies /Organizations.

  1. 3) Scholarship Students:-

All Scholarship category students are eligible for scholarship of Rs.12, 400/- per month under DBT scheme of AICTE during the M. Tech. Course.

  1. MoD Sponsored (External Part-Time Students): - The Institute being an Autonomous Body, fully funded by Dept of Defence R&D, there is no course fee / semester fee for sponsored candidates of Ministry of Defence, Govt of India.
  1. All other Category (Full Time PhD Students, Internal Part-Time PhD Students, External Part-Time PhD Students and Self Sponsored Students):- Semester Fee details are as under :-
